Botlekbrug – A15 Maasvlakte- Vaanplein

Within the framework of Rijkswaterstaat's tender procedure for the renovation of the Maasvlakte-Vaanplein section of the A15 highway, a new design for the Botlek Bridge has been created. The Port of Europe consortium, comprising BAM, Vinci, and CFE organizations, commissioned Benthem Crouwel Architects to create an architectural design for the new Botlek Bridge.

The characteristic existing bridge has insufficient capacity and requires intensive maintenance. The renewal of the A15 section provides an opportunity to replace the bridge. The new Botlek Bridge will need to meet the client's desire for an innovative, contemporary structure, which has resulted in an ingenious, integrated architectural and structural design. The number of different defining elements of the new bridge has been minimized, creating a clear, powerful image.

Despite the large scale of the approach spans, the scale shift at the lift bridges is unmistakable. The lift towers stand on sturdy pillars that rise from the water. The lift towers are designed to be recognizable as identical but separate from a distance. However, when viewed up close, differences become visible. The four outer towers have a wider base allowing for better force distribution, and the slightly sloped sides show a clear termination. This 'slant' also references the characteristic shape of classic lift bridges, of which the existing Botlek Bridge is one. The middle towers stand 'back to back' and are kept subtly separated by a slight incision. All towers open toward the top, providing insight into the operation of the lift bridges. When closed, the counterweights are visible at the top of the towers; when the bridge opens, these weights disappear into the tower as the bridge deck rises. The 'drum' over which the eight cables that support the bridge deck run is also visible. The association with harbor machinery is easily made. The entire mechanism at the top of the tower is protected by the two widened and flaring side walls of the towers. In the evening and at night, the opening will be illuminated from within so that this unique feature of the new Botlek Bridge will remain subtly visible.
