To accommodate the growing number of passengers at Schiphol Airport, Lounge 1, the airside of Terminal 1, has undergone a strategic expansion and complete reorganization.

As part of the redevelopment of Terminal 1, passengers enter the lounge after passing the new security filter at the second floor. The new routing and growing passenger numbers required a complete overhaul of the lounge. While simultaneously aiming for a high-quality ambience, easy-wayfinding and short walking distances, the design also offers new commercial offerings. With its renewed layout and elevated experience, the new Lounge 1 plays a key role in advancing Schiphol’s ambition to deliver a world‑class passenger journey. The design defines three areas, each with its own appearance. This ensures that passengers can easily find their way and travel comfortably and effortlessly.

The entrance to the lounge has been designed to evoke a welcoming feeling. Warm materials such as bamboo accompany departing passengers past the shops to the central square and its café’s, restaurants and coffee shops.

The centerpiece of the lounge is a facility offering a flexible space for shops, a flagship store, and a seating area. This area, is inspired by Dutch skies with their ever-changing clouds. The white, curved facades and a pattern of dots represent the clouds, while the lighting, which color and intensity changes throughout the day, mimic the passing of time. The positioning of the structure in the lounge separates the flows of incoming and departing passengers, thereby preventing congestion in the terminal.

The zone adjacent close to the airside facade has been designed as a calm, open area, with a fresh and tranquil atmosphere. This zone is meant for catering and relaxation, while also housing services as transfer areas, Lost & Found, lockers, and various seating areas. This zone offers peace and comfort: a place to wait, work or relax with a direct view on the business of the platforms.

The redesign and expansion of the lounge is as sustainable as possible. For example, the ceiling is made of recyclable aluminum and the floor tiles are made of residual marble, quartz and granite. The furniture is covered with leather from waste streams and the wooden walls are made of sustainable bamboo.
