On May 21st 2026, the ceremonial start of construction marked a new chapter for the monumental Koninklijke Tichelaar factory site in Makkum, where this iconic ceramics and glazes manufacturer has been rooted since 1572. Commissioned by real estate developer PAAvON, Benthem Crouwel Architects developed a plan combining the restoration of the four listed monuments on the site with new senior housing for the local community. The design draws inspiration from Makkum's meandering streets, varied architecture, and ceramic heritage. The 32 care homes each have their own distinct character – subtly shifting in depth and varying in ridge direction, creating a diverse ensemble rather than a single monolithic block. Windows are playfully composed yet strategically placed to optimize views from every home. All ceramic bricks are developed by Tichelaar itself, weaving a continuous material thread between past and present. We look forward to seeing this project take shape and contribute to the future of this monumental place.
