Redevelopment Departure Hall 1 - Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Due to significant passenger growth in Terminal 1, an expansion of the security filter was necessary to ensure a fluent and comfortable passengers journey. By concentrating and connecting the security filters of Terminals 1 and 2, the total capacity has been increased up to 35 lanes. With the completion of a new mezzanine, passengers benefit from an enhanced and more comfortable travel experience, while safety and convenience are ensured.

A NEW MEZZANINE

Through smart design modifications, the available space has been doubled, allowing passengers to move through security more efficiently and conveniently. To achieve this, the security filter was relocated on a new mezzanine floor, creating additional space for passenger processing in the terminal. The new floor in Departures 1 connects seamlessly to the mezzanine floor of Terminal 2, which also accommodates its security filter. Together, these areas– equivalent in size to two football fields– form the largest security filter in the world.

STATE-OF-THE-ART SECURITY

The security lanes in the new departure area are equipped with state-of-the-art CT scan technology. This offers multiple advantages: passengers can pass through security with greater ease, and security personnel benefit from improved working conditions and efficiency.

SHORT ROUTES, MORE SPACE

As part of the expansion, additional space was created to establish a direct connection to the mezzanine level above the check-in counters. Passengers departing from Terminals 1 and 2 who are traveling with hand luggage only can now access the mezzanine directly from the entrance via a new staircase, escalator, or lift. This eliminates the need to pass through the check-in area, helping to reduce congestion and creating a quicker, more streamlined route for these travelers.

During the redevelopment a new entrance to the Panorama Terrace was constructed, featuring newly installed stairs, escalators, and a lift. Additionally, a new stairway, escalator, and lift have been completed at the rear of Departure Hall 1, providing direct access for passengers who have passed through security and are heading to Lounge 1.
